Green Party stands in solidarity with Burnaby Mountain protesters

(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada stands in solidarity with the protesters who were arrested on Burnaby Mountain. These concerned individuals were peacefully protesting the survey work conducted by Kinder Morgan for its proposed expansion of the Trans-Mountain Pipeline.

The City of Burnaby is currently seeking a court injunction against Kinder Morgan. As well, many First Nations groups have heavily criticized the project, citing a lack of consultation and respect for their lands.

On Friday, the BC Supreme Court issued an order to remove the protesters from the site by Monday. As a result, more protesters flocked to the site in defiance.

Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf said that she stands with protesters against the illegal work being conducted by Kinder Morgan that was surprisingly permitted by the National Energy Board (NEB). She also said that she urged the protesters to continue to practice non-violent resistance.

“This entire NEB process has been tainted by fraud through the misrepresentation of Kinder Morgan's evidence and shoddy research,” said Ms. May. “Non-violent‎ civil disobedience is a Charter protected right. Greens appreciate the determination embodied in the courageous actions of those arrested today."
