“As the critic for Status of Women, Fran will use her experiences in community development to work towards the end of violence against women.” – Elizabeth May
(OTTAWA) - Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands, is pleased to announce the appointment of Cowichan – Malahat - Langford candidate, Fran Hunt - Jinnouchi, as the Party’s Status of Women Critic.
“I am inspired by Fran Hunt-Jinnouchi and her impressive record of working tirelessly in her community to improve the lives of women,” said May. “As the critic for Status of Women, Fran will use her experiences to work towards the end of violence against women.”
Hunt-Jinnouchi is the owner of Evedar’s Bistro in Langford, B.C. She was the former elected Chief of the Quatsino First Nation and former director of the Office of Indigenous Affairs at the University of Victoria. She also provides consulting and support services to indigenous communities and organizations. Her work focuses on community development and reciprocal relationship building between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples/organizations.
“The Harper Conservatives claim to fight for women’s equality, but they have failed to implement affordable childcare, housing, and pay equity programs,” said Hunt-Jinnouchi. “The inability for women to access affordable housing or education places them at a greater risk of violence. In my new role as the Status of Women critic, I am committed to finding solutions to end the ongoing cycle of violence against Indigenous women and to advancing women’s rights for the benefit of all Canadians.”
