Canadian comedy legend runs for Greens in Newfoundland

OTTAWA – Canadian comedy legend Greg Malone is making a late-career transition to politics. Malone, famous for his acting and writing in the CBC television shows CODCO and WGB TV, has been selected to run for the Green Party in the Newfoundland riding of Avalon.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) congratulated Malone and said she was delighted to welcome yet another outstanding candidate to the party’s slate for the 2019 election.

“I’m a huge fan of Greg’s creative work in satire and political comedy,” said Ms. May. “But in addition to his considerable creative accomplishments, I’m also impressed by his dedication to activism.

“He has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the health care issues facing persons living with HIV-AIDS. He also campaigned successfully to stop the privatization of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. Greg will be a wonderful standard bearer for the Greens in Newfoundland, Labrador and Canada.”

Born and educated in St. John’s, Malone is a Canadian legend. Best known for his acting and writing roles in the CODCO and WGB TV shows, his work also includes films, many television specials, radio programs and countless stage shows and international theatre tours. In recent years he has been a motivational speaker at events across Canada on a variety of topics including AIDS, globalization and the environment. His memoir, You Better Watch Out, and his latest book, Don’t Tell The Newfoundlanders, about the international collusion that brought Newfoundland into the Canadian Confederation, are both national bestsellers.

Greg Malone feels that all life on the planet is facing an existential crisis. “Everyone in their right mind should know and be concerned about this,” he said. “The Green Party gets it. They put it at the top of their agenda where it belongs. And government by corporation just isn't working. That’s why I want to support Elizabeth May and Greens around the globe. This is literally the battle of our lifetime."
