David Merner named Green Party candidate in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke

ESQUIMALT – Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) is delighted to announce that lawyer David Merner is the Green Party of Canada candidate in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke. Mr. Merner was acclaimed during a recent meeting of the party’s electoral district association.

Mr. Merner, who was the Liberal Party candidate in the riding in 2015, said he parted ways with the Liberal Party of Canada over Prime Minister Trudeau’s broken promises on electoral reform, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, and the review of the Trans Mountain pipeline.

“Integrity is crucial,” said Mr. Merner. “The Trudeau Liberals have broken a very long list of core campaign commitments, so I decided to leave the Liberals after 34 years of volunteering. I am hugely impressed by Elizabeth May and the Green team, and I am looking forward to turning Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke Green.”

A husband and a father of four daughters, Mr. Merner earned degrees from Harvard College and the Universities of Alberta, Oxford and Toronto.  He was called to the B.C. and Ontario bars and advised ministers at the Department of Justice and Privy Council Office in Ottawa for 15 years before moving back to B.C. in 2006 to transform the province’s justice system.

“The Green Party welcomes David with open arms. We will greatly benefit from his experience, his energy and his determination to speak truth to power on our economy and our democracy,” said Ms. May.
