OTTAWA – Hundreds of Green Party members from across Canada will come together in Fredericton New Brunswick this weekend, July 18-20 for the Green Party of Canada’s 2014 Convention.
From July 18 to 20, Convention delegates from coast to coast will vote on policy resolutions, participate in campaign workshops, and hear from guest speakers including former Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page, Samara Canada Chairman and co-founder Michael MacMillan, and world-renowned climate scientist Tom Duck. Policy debates will include the current situation in Gaza, the issue of physician-assisted suicide and how to structure the carbon tax.
“We have achieved so much since our 2012 Convention in Sidney, from passing the first-ever Green legislation in the House of Commons, dealing with the growing threat of Lyme disease, being the only opposition party to participate in global climate negotiations, to putting forward hundreds of amendments to help ensure that Canadians are well represented,” stated Green Party of Canada Leader, Elizabeth May and Member of Parliament (MP) for Saanich–Gulf Islands. “This Convention is also an opportunity to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together as we prepare for the next federal election.”
“Over the coming days, we will have a conversation about our shared vision for Canada’s future, and how we can work together to make that vision a reality,” said Green Deputy Leader Bruce Hyer, MP for Thunder Bay–Superior North. “There’s never been a more exciting time to be a Green.”
"It is an enormous privilege to serve my constituents from Saanich-Gulf Islands in the House of Commons. Bruce Hyer and I attempt to prove every day that MPs can effectively represent their constituents, without mindlessly toeing a party line. Gathering with our members from across Canada is another way we show how the Greens differ from other parties. Our grassroots is our highest level of authority. We have practical realistic goals to create a more dynamic, sustainable economy with greater employment for all Canadians. The Green Party principles are crystal clear – all governments must be accountable to its citizens and that is not what is happening today.”
