Greens call for federal intervention to save NB Morgentaler Clinic

Fredericton - Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Saanich Gulf Islands, today urges federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose to intervene to defend women's rights in New Brunswick.

With the province's Morgentaler clinic closing tomorrow, New Brunswick women are on the verge of losing access to safe, legal abortion.

"It is completely unacceptable that women's health and safety should be put at risk in this way," said May. "I call on the federal and provincial governments to take immediate action to ensure that women's rights are protected."

May and Green Deputy Leader Bruce Hyer will join New Brunswick Green Party Leader David Coon at the Choix NB Choice Save the Clinic rally at the New Brunswick Legislature today at noon.

"This is a crisis for the women of New Brunswick," said Coon. "Premier Alward has a responsibility to intervene and ensure that Horizon Health Network takes over the operation of this essential clinic."
