(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada congratulates Elizabeth May, Green Party Leader and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands, who was named the 3rd Most Valuable Politician in a recent survey by the Hill Times.
“I am very honoured by this result. It validates that one MP can make a difference in the House,” said Ms. May. “Being selected after the other two Opposition Leaders in a highly polarized Parliament suggests that even the leader of a very small opposition party plays a valuable role in our Westminster Parliamentary Democracy. It certainly should cement my place in the leaders' debate.”
Survey respondents praised Ms. May’s non-partisan approach to legislation as well as her profound understanding and respect for Parliamentary procedure. An unidentified respondent said that “Elizabeth May is the only one who tries to get things done that would be good for Canada and Canadians.”
“I am extremely proud of Elizabeth,” said Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Thunder Bay - Superior North. "I will go out on a limb and say a politician is valuable only when he or she respects the citizens of this country and works hard to earn their respect, which Elizabeth clearly has always done."
"Elizabeth has consistently demonstrated that it is possible for any parliamentarian to follow a principled road,” said Daniel Green, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada. “Elizabeth has always sought to find solutions to problems that Canada faces and has never compromised on her principles – Congratulations Elizabeth!”
This year, climate change was named as the Second Most Important Issue Facing the Country for 2015. It was also named as the Most Important Issue that Politicians aren’t Addressing, as well as the Political Promise Least Likely to be Kept in 2015.
Ms. May said she was not surprised that climate change is now being recognized as one of the most important issues facing Canadians today.
“I am pleased to see that climate change is now a top of mind issue among Canadians,” concluded Elizabeth May. “As awareness grows about the impacts of climate change, I am hopeful that policies which reflect the urgency will be implemented quickly.” -30-
