Elizabeth May responds to Mulcair’s refusal to participate in national televised debates

“Mr. Mulcair claims that the Canadian public is ‘best served through a variety of debates,’ yet he refuses to participate…”

(OTTAWA)Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (Saanich – Gulf Islands) today replied to Tom Mulcair’s letter regarding the leaders debates:
“Mr. Mulcair claims that the Canadian public is ‘best served through a variety of debates,’ yet he refuses to participate,” said May. “Mr. Mulcair has backed out of the women's debate and he bailed on the English national televised leaders’ debate.

“In 2011, over 14 million Canadians watched the televised leaders' debates. This year, thanks to Mr. Mulcair and Mr. Harper, Canadians may be deprived of a fully accessible English leaders’ debate from our national television broadcasters.

“This is unacceptable. Canadians deserve the opportunity to watch their leaders’ debate on issues that affect them. It is an important part of the election process.

“I urge Mr. Mulcair, in the interest of public engagement and higher voter turn-out, to restore his earlier acceptance of the major CBC-CTV-Global English leaders debate.”
