Elizabeth May addresses Foreign Policy on Social Media Tonight

(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (Saanich-Gulf Islands) will demonstrate her in-depth foreign policy knowledge tonight through video responses posted on Twitter. She will provide insights on the topics raised this evening during the Munk Debate.

“Canadians deserve to hear all leaders debate the issues,” said Ms. May. “Through the use of new and innovate technologies, I will provide a perspective that no other leader can: a women’s point of view on international relations.

“A federal leader’s debate needs to be informed by women’s values,” added May. “A woman’s perspective on the refugee crisis, the plight of mothers in developing nations around the world, and the oppression of women is essential to the national discussion.”

Julian Morelli, Green Party of Canada’s Director of Communications continued:

“I find it both astonishing and perplexing that Munk officials decided to deny Canadians the chance to hear from all the federal party leaders, particularly when one of the key segments in this debate focuses on one of the key challenges we face - climate change. It’s clear that Elizabeth May leads this discussion in Canada. It, along with security, is surely one of the most important policy issues of our time, that leaders from all around the world must address.

We attempted to meet with Munk officials on several occasions to have them reconsider their decision not to include Elizabeth May in the debate. They refused and provided the weakest explanation possible. It’s simply inexcusable.”

Ms. May has participated in climate change negotiations since 1990, giving her the necessary foreign policy credentials.  Forty days following the election, the United Nations 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) on climate change will take place in Paris.

“It is absolutely critical that we have a change in government and strategy when Canada participates in these negotiations in Paris,” concluded Elizabeth May. “By sending more Green MPs to Ottawa, in what we expect will be a minority government, we will work with all parties ensure that Canada reestablishes itself as world leader in protecting our environment for our children and generations to come.”
