Elizabeth May questions Site ‘C’ permits issued during federal election campaign

(OTTAWA) – Today during Question Period, Green Party of Canada leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) questioned why the previous government issued 14 permits for work on the $9-billion Site ‘C’ dam during last fall’s federal election campaign.

“This is highly a controversial project,” Ms. May said. “Its sole purpose is to provide electricity for LNG development, and the federal Joint Review Panel found the project directly affects Treaty 8 treaty rights of area First Nations. The Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs should commit to not allowing further permits to be issued while treaty rights for indigenous people remain outstanding.”

Construction of the Site ‘C’ dam will cause devastating environmental destruction and flood 23,000 hectares of land along 107-kilometres of the Peace River Valley in northern B.C.
