Green Party of Canada Convention 2016 wraps up

(OTTAWA) August 7, 2016 -- The Green Party of Canada released the following statement at the conclusion of Convention 2016:

“This weekend, our members from across the country engaged in democratic, open and respectful debate,” said Ken Melamed, Federal Council President. “From the rights of Indigenous peoples and LGBTQ+ Canadians to supporting divestment from fossil fuels, the Green Party continues to set the bar on progressive policy for Canadians. I am proud of our efforts and accomplishments this weekend.”

“The Party membership also voted to express support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. I want to be clear -- the GPC supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and we continue to advocate for good-faith negotiations. This support is intended to further advocate to that end. Our members, like many Canadians, will continue to search for ways to support both sides while acknowledging the complexity of the various security, economic, and religious concerns.”

Members also voted by majority to adopt a resolution that calls on the Canada Revenue Agency to revoke the charitable status of any organization that violates Canadian or international human rights law.

"Overall, we had a terrific convention,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “Engaged members from across the country came and reaffirmed deep commitment to climate action, fair voting and turning away from unfair trade deals.

“As Leader, I am disappointed that the membership has adopted a policy in favour of a movement that I believe to be polarizing, ineffective and unhelpful in the quest for peace and security for the peoples of the Middle East. As is the right of any member, I will continue to express personal opposition to BDS,” Ms. May said.

The GPC’s resolution process is very different from other parties. Members come up with resolutions independently. Neither the Leader nor anyone in the executive of the party can reject resolutions that comply with submission guidelines, nor does the Party know ahead of time what resolutions will come forward. This grassroots process is a testament to the democratic values of the Party.
