OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada has announced it will establish an award in honour of late Green Party Policy Director, Angela Sharon Rickman. The Angela Rickman Memorial Award will be presented at each Biennial General Meeting of the Party to a member who, like Angela, has made significant contributions to Green policy development. The motion was passed unanimously at the July 26, 2020 meeting of the Federal Council.
A committed environmentalist, Angela spent her career fighting to make the world a better place for all. After working in the office of MP Ian Waddell, she moved to the Sierra Club where she met her friend and mentor Elizabeth May. After working with other environmental NGOs, she returned to Parliament Hill with the NDP in the Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition. Her last position was as the Political Director for the Green Party of Canada, where she helped draft the Party’s platform in the 2019 election.
"Angela Rickman was the rarest of people,” said Green parliamentary leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “She was hard-working, and yet brought a spirit of mischief and fun to work. She was hilarious. She was wholly committed to making the world a better place. Even after her diagnosis with ALS, she insisted on staying with the Green Party to get the platform completed. She was a loving wife and mother and a devoted friend. I will miss her forever."
Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts reflected that Angela Rickman was a remarkable person who had a way of understanding the importance of policy being both practical and politically effective. “Angela was a person of vision and knew how to inspire others to think of what is possible if we work together,” said Ms. Roberts. “I was so fortunate to know her — my grief is that our time together was so short and our relationship was just getting started. I want her family and friends to know that the Green Party hopes this award will ensure Angela will be remembered for generations to come.”
Angela Rickman passed away on July 17, 2020. Her full obituary was published in the Ottawa Citizen.
