Green Party Leadership Contest hosts National Francophone debate

OTTAWA – Tonight, the Green Party of Canada’s leadership contestants will participate in the first national francophone debate, moderated by respected journalist Anne-Caroline Desplanques, from the Journal de Montreal’s parliamentary bureau.

The French debate will be the last official leadership contest debate organized by the Party, before the new Leader is announced at a live event in Ottawa, on October 3rd.

"For the first time in the history of this Party, a national francophone debate is being organized,” said Green Party Deputy Leader Daniel Green. “This unique opportunity will provide thousands of francophone members the chance to evaluate the contestants vying to be the next Leader.”

The debate format aims to encourage exchanges between the leadership contestants. The debate moderator will question the contestants on five different topics, and each contestant will have 45 seconds to respond to each question. Following this, there will be an open debate period, when contestants will be randomly split into two groups of four. During this portion, debate time in each group will not exceed 6 minutes.

“We’re delighted francophones across the country will have this unique opportunity to meet our inspiring and diverse leadership contestants,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “This has been an exciting contest with some great debates, and we wanted to be sure that French speaking Canadians were included.”

The eight contestants are (in alphabetical order): Meryam Haddad (QC), Courtney Howard (NWT), Amita Kuttner (BC), Dimitri Lascaris (QC), David Merner (BC), Glen Murray (MB), Annamie Paul (ON) and Andrew West (ON).
