OTTAWA - As of March 17, 2024, the criminal code will change to make access to MAID legal for people where mental health constitutes a grievous and irremediable medical condition.
The Green Party of Canada strongly feels that social and economic supports, as well as other treatments, must be in place before MAID is considered for cases where the sole underlying condition is mental illness.
It must not be easier to access MAID than beneficial treatments such as psilocybin (magic mushrooms) or better mental health services. It must never be the case that people opt for MAID because society has failed to meet their basic needs.
We will continue to press the Liberal government to move rapidly to provide necessary treatments and socio-economic supports needed.
