Elizabeth May Demands Proper Investigation into Robocall Scandal

(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands, has launched a formal complaint with Elections Canada Commissioner Yves Coté. She will review her complaint and call for a full investigation at a press conference on Thursday, November 27 at 11:30 a.m. EST.

The robocall scandal has been established as a coordinated attempt to defraud thousands of voters in the 2011 Federal Election that may have had significant impacts in at least 7 ridings across Canada. Voters reported that they received live and recorded calls from people impersonating Elections Canada officials claiming that their voting station had changed, with the intended purpose of discouraging identified non-Conservative supporters from voting. Two court cases have reviewed the evidence from seven ridings - Guelph, Winnipeg South – Centre, Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar, Elmwood-Transcona, Nipissing-Temiskaming, Vancouver Island North and the Yukon. However, reports of robocalls were made from dozens more ridings.
