(OTTAWA) - Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and candidate/incumbent MP (Saanich - Gulf Islands), issued the following statement on World Humanitarian Day:
“Canadians join people around the world today to recognize the extraordinary work that aid workers are accomplishing and the tremendous sacrifice that so many of them have made.
“The work these compassionate and selfless men and women have done has shaped our historical international reputation as a respected country ready to step up when needed. By working in the next minority Parliament to increase the humanitarian aid Canada provides, we can restore our reputation that has been tarnished by Stephen Harper.”
Claire Martin, Green Party candidate (North Vancouver), continued:
“World Humanitarian Day is an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.
“It is quintessentially Canadian to want to help others in their time of need, and this day acts as reminder of the importance of a country like Canada stepping up on a global scale.”
Ms. May concluded: “On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I thank all humanitarian aid workers for improving the lives of so many people around the world.”
