Greens partner with Twitter Canada to take part in The Globe and Mail Federal Leaders’ Debate

May will participate in the debate, despite the Globe’s attempt to exclude her

(OTTAWA) Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (Saanich – Gulf Islands), will take part in the Globe and Mail’s Federal Leaders’ Debate on Thursday, via Twitter.

“The Green Party’s use of Twitter and other forms of social media are examples of the increasing use of social media to further grassroots democracy,” stated May. “Canadians want to hear about issues that matter to them and our partnership with Twitter Canada makes that possible.”

“Despite the Globe and Mail’s attempt to exclude the Green Party and Elizabeth May from the debate, she will participate,” said Julian Morelli, Director of Communications of the Green Party of Canada. “We simply cannot understand why the Globe has chosen to exclude Elizabeth, while Macleans' and the three major National Television Broadcasters invited her to their debates.”

During the debate, May will respond to questions posed by the moderator in real-time through a Twitter video feed. The Green Party anticipates that national and regional media will report on May’s responses and provide commentary during the Globe debate.

“Through the use of emerging technologies and in partnership with Twitter Canada, we have the ability to discuss economic policies and jobs. Canadians will have the opportunity to hear Elizabeth May’s plan,” continued Morelli.

“I’m pleased to be able to get the Green Party’s message out to all Canadians during the debate and to give them a chance to hear from all major party leaders,” concluded May.
