(OTTAWA) – Three Green Party candidates, Elizabeth May (Saanich- Gulf Islands), Bruce Hyer (Thunder Bay-Superior North), and Gord Miller (Guelph), have been endorsed by Greenpac.
The three were recognized for their commitment to the environment and achievements in environmental protection. Greenpac is a nonpartisan organization that promotes strong political leaders who actively work to protect the environment.
Elizabeth May is one of Canada’s foremost environmental activists. She has worked to protect the environment since the 1970s. May served as senior policy advisor to the Minister of Environment in the 1980s and Executive Director of the Sierra Club Canada from 1989 to 2006. She was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2005 for her lifetime of environmental work and named in the Global 500 by the United Nations.
Bruce Hyer is running for re-election in Thunder Bay-Superior. He worked as a Senior Environmental Analyst in the United States’ first Department of Environmental Protection. Hyer made key contributions on legislation and regulations banning DDT and the “Dirty Dozen” pesticides. He moved to Canada in 1976 and started WildWaters Nature Tours & Expeditions Ltd., an eco-tourism business that offers trips through Canada’s remote Boreal and Arctic regions.
Gord Miller, who is running in Guelph, served as the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, acting as the province's environmental watchdog, from 2000 to 2015. Before becoming Environment Commissioner, Miller spent 14 years working for Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment.
Candidates were selected by an Expert Panel made up of non-partisan leaders in various environmental fields and evaluated based on their past environment-related accomplishments in the private, public, and NGO sectors. Political platforms and campaign promises were not assessed.
