Miller: “I will be Guelph’s champion in Ottawa”
GUELPH – Gord Miller has a plan for Guelph. Tonight, Ontario’s former Environment Commissioner and Green Party candidate unveiled what Guelph can expect from him in the first 100 days as MP, alongside Elizabeth May, Green Party Leader (Saanich-Gulf Islands).
“As a former Officer of the Ontario Legislature, I know the economic, social, and environmental issues that impact the city of Guelph,” said Miller, the province’s former environment watchdog.
“I will be Guelph’s champion in Ottawa,” said Miller to an overflowing crowd of supporters at the Guelph River Run Centre. “I will fight for issues that are important to the people of Guelph, like affordable education, health care, and jobs.”
“Gord Miller is the best choice for Guelph,” stated Ms. May. “Gord has the experience, the drive, and the passion to make a great MP. The Green Surge is sweeping through Guelph and we’ll soon have our first Green MP elected in Ontario next week.”
Mr. Miller spoke about Guelph’s large student population and the need to eliminate the burden of student debt at the town hall. “The Green Party’s plan to eliminate student debt as soon as possible for students and their families will significantly relieve the financial burden that many Canadians struggle with everyday,” stated Mr. Miller.
Ms. May and Mr. Miller discussed the Green Party’s plan for a National Seniors’ Strategy and stressed that the Green Party recognizes the unique needs of Guelph’s aging population.
“Our National Pharmacare Plan will save billions of dollars and ensures that 2 million Canadians would have access to medications that they need and otherwise could not afford,” said Ms. May.
The economy and environment were other topics discussed during the town hall. Mr. Miller said that the Green Party’s focus on sustainable agriculture, energy efficiency, renewable energy, digital upgrades, clean-tech manufacturing, the creative economy and emerging technologies will create jobs in Guelph and the surrounding region.
Green MPs will fight for a strong climate treaty and lead in the critical negotiations at the United Nations 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) in Paris.
"The COP21 negotiations are the last, best, and only chance for humanity to avert an intensified climate crisis. We are the only party addressing the need for a national greenhouse gas emission reduction target and diplomatic efforts before COP21," said Ms. May. "Mr. Miller's experience and in-depth understanding of climate change would make him an exceptional Canadian government delegate, who could help negotiate the treaty the world so desperately needs."
Miller stressed that environmental protections need to be restored; particularly those related to water that were removed by Conservative omnibus legislation. He stated that his own personal priority is the protection of biodiversity across Canada when he is elected as Guelph’s MP.
