(OTTAWA) — The Green Party of Canada released the following statement on International Human Rights Day 2017:
“This day represents an important time for us to be grateful for the human rights achievements we have made in Canada — and in countries around the world — while also pushing us to work harder towards the full realization of equality, justice and dignity for all. At home, we have made some praiseworthy progress in our treatment of Indigenous peoples, but we still have an enormous amount of work to do in upholding human rights for First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
The Green Party’s Human Rights Critic, Joe Foster, added: “The United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an incredibly powerful document that must continue to guide us in our quest to achieve basic human rights around the world. Today marks the start of a year-long campaign leading up to the 70th anniversary of this crucial Declaration. The Green Party commits to redoubling our efforts to promote the inalienable rights of all people, regardless of one’s background, identity and political affiliation. At home, we must continue to press that all Canadians have the right to clean water and shelter.”
