OTTAWA -- It’s Environment Week in Canada, a time when Canadians are encouraged to participate in environmental activities and discover ways in which they can become more actively involved in protecting and caring for the natural world.
“Environment Week promotes awareness and offers Canadians a chance to discover all kinds of organizations and programs that are working hard to protect and conserve the environment,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “The David Suzuki Foundation’s Blue Dot petition has been signed by thousands of Canadians and adopted by 173 municipalities. People want to have a healthy environment, clean air and water, safe food and a stable climate.
“The Green Party fully supports an Environmental Bill of Rights. The more Green MPs are elected, the closer we get to creating rights for a healthy environment. Over 110 countries around the world recognize the rights of their citizens to a healthy environment. Canada remains one of a half dozen that do not. It’s time we changed this. Fighting pollution, climate change and extinction will help Canadians gain that right.”
Deputy Leader of the Green Party, Daniel Green added: “It is obvious to me that the spirit of Canadian Environment Week must continue for the other 51 weeks of the year. Our survival depends on it.”
