OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada commemorates today the 68th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bomb attack. The city of Hiroshima, Japan, was bombed on Augusts 6th, 1945.
“Now is the time to make nuclear disarmament a reality. It is true that nuclear weapons have not been used since 1945, but arsenals around the world still contain many thousands of these weapons,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands.
Since the Second World War, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings caused more than 400,000 deaths.
Elizabeth May will take part in the Annual Hiroshima Day observance on Salt Spring Island on August 6th.
“It is a sign of the strong commitment to nuclear disarmament across Canada that Hiroshima Day is being marked on tiny Salt Spring Island and in the heart of Toronto in Nathan Philips Square where Shirley Douglas is a featured speaker. We all stand in solidarity committed to a world free of the threat of nuclear war,” said May.
The Green Party of Canada has a long-standing policy calling for global nuclear disarmament. “We recognize an urgent need for global nuclear disarmament and the conversion of military industries in Canada and worldwide into peaceful and restorative industries,” said May.
