OTTAWA – Today, the Green Party of Canada remembers the 47 people who died the night of July 6, 2013 in the town of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec when a runaway train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded in the town centre.
“Our deepest sympathies go to all those who lost loved ones in this tragedy,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “Our thoughts are also with the survivors, for whom the traumatic memories must still endure.
“We hope that Canadian Pacific Railway and the federal government will make good on their commitment to complete the rail bypass project by 2023. This cannot come soon enough for the residents of Lac-Mégantic as they work to rebuild their lives and their community.”
