Cabinet reshuffle: Superficial Changes Won't Solve Fundamental Problems, says Green Party

OTTAWA - Today, the Liberal government presented its new look. The Green Party of Canada would like to thank the departing ministers for their service and congratulate the new appointees. However, despite the appearance of a new beginning, this government is poised to continue in the same direction at a time when the problems facing Canadians warrant foundational changes to our economy, our politics and our federation.

"Just like Pierre Poilièvre taking off his glasses, Justin Trudeau's cabinet reshuffle has more to do with cosmetics than politics," said Deputy Leader Jonathan Pedneault. « The NDP-backed Liberal government may present some new faces, but this government is poised to remain insufficient on the climate emergency, the housing crisis and the rising cost of living as long as they refuse to treat these issues as the systemic, whole-of-government challenges that they are."

" If this cabinet is to succeed - and we wish them the best - ministers will need to work closely with the communities that they serve and seek as much information as they can about the climate and biodiversity crises as they can to assess how these will impact their portfolios. Ideally, they would receive a briefing from top scientists on those two crisis before they begin their work, " said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada.

In closing, Leader May and Mike Morrice, MP for Kitchener Centre both expressed their hopes to continue to collaborate with ministers on issues that matter to her consituents. "I hope to work closely with two important Quebec ministers, Pablo Rodriguez for transport and Diane Lebouthilier at Fisheries and Oceans, who will need to urgently familiarize themselves with critical issues for BC coastal communities such as the elimination of salmon farms and the protection of the southern resident killer whales, " May said. " Similarly, I look forward to engaging with minister Fraser on the crucial work that remains to be done to protect Canadian renters from abusive landlords and ensure that the right to housing be upheld in this country, " Morrice concluded.
