(OTTAWA) - As Canadians observe International Women’s Day this Sunday, the Green Party of Canada celebrates the many achievements of women in this country, while recognizing that the struggle for equality continues around the world.
“In my lifetime, women have made huge strides. We are now leaders in business, government, and higher learning,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands. “While much remains to be done, as the only woman leader of a federal political party, I am committed to keeping women’s rights front and centre.”
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. The UN General Assembly first recognized the day in 1977. This year’s theme is “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!”
Fran Hunt-Jinnouchi, Green Party Critic for Status of Women and candidate for Cowichan – Malahat – Langford, added International Women's Day reminds Canadians about the importance of women's safety and integrity.
“International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to unite worldwide to celebrate the unique gifts and nurturing spirits of women, and to celebrate our strength – we are also reminded of the struggles from before and ahead,” said Hunt-Jinnouchi. “We must ensure women are free of violence, and equal in standing, participation and leadership. ”
“In the upcoming election, Canadians will have an opportunity to vote for strong Green Party candidates – women leaders – in broadcasting, science, the arts, and law,” concluded Elizabeth May. “The Green Party is committed to an inclusive society, where everyone is valued equally regardless of gender.”
