(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement for Labour Day 2016:
“Today, the Green Party of Canada celebrates the accomplishments of the Canadian labour movement, and notes the challenges that lie ahead.
“Unions and labour groups have remained a critical driver in the advancement of human and worker rights in Canada. It is because of the labour movement that we have moved away from the days of child labour to enjoy more equitable compensation, just relations with management, and safer working conditions,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
“Government must do more to ensure pay equity for women becomes reality. In a post-recession economy, the labour movement also has to remain vigilant in opposing the erosion of pensions, benefits and other hard-won workers’ rights.”
