(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement on World Rivers Day 2016:
“World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world's waterways and highlights the critical importance of rivers and the need for improved stewardship of rivers around the world. In Canada, our rivers remain under threat – thanks more so to the Harper administration’s removal of 99 per cent of rivers and lakes from federal protection under the Navigable Waters Protection Act with the passing of Bill C-45. Today, just 68 rivers in Canada are protected under the Act,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
“The Green Party of Canada continues to call on the new administration to take action to reverse this shameful decision, and enshrine the right to a healthy environment in Canada’s Constitution.”
