(OTTAWA) February 1, 2017 - February marks the 21st annual Black History Month in Canada. The Green Party of Canada honours the achievements made by black Canadians, while acknowledging that more still needs to be done to promote equality.
“As we celebrate our 150th anniversary since Confederation, we acknowledge that diversity is Canada’s strength,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “Black history is part of Canada’s history. Late last year, Canadians honoured the memory of Viola Desmond, who stood up to racism in 1946 by challenging segregation. She will now be Canada’s first woman to grace a Bank of Canada note. It's difficult to imagine this level of racism in Canada today, thanks to the efforts of Viola and many others. But we must collectively continue to oppose racism and xenophobia in all its forms.”
“I encourage all Canadians to take part in the many events recognizing Black History Month in their communities,” said Joe Foster, GPC Human Rights Critic. “Canada is proud of the contributions of all Black Canadians. We are stronger because of our diversity and multiculturalism.”
