(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:
“The obstacles to living an equal and dignified life in Canada for those living with disabilities are significant, but we most certainly can overcome them. Far too many Canadians with disabilities are relegated to poverty and social exclusion. If we are to reach the fair and equitable society that all Canadians have the right to live in, government has a duty to step up to the plate,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada.
“The Green Party welcomes the Trudeau Administration’s stated commitment to address many of the concerns of those living with physical or mental disabilities in Canada, and awaits with great anticipation the legislation the Liberal government promised to introduce in 2018. We continue to push for the adoption of a Guaranteed Liveable Income, which we believe is the best solution to addressing systemic poverty in Canada, especially for those living with disabilities and their families,” continued Ms. May.
Joe Foster, Human Rights Critic for the Green Party of Canada, added: “The Green Party will continue to advocate and give priority for the values of inclusivity and social justice that we share with all Canadians.”
“In the spirit of the Green Party’s cherished values of inclusivity and social justice, we will always prioritize rigorous advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities in Canada. Each and every one of us has the right to be integrated into all facets of our society, regardless of one’s physical or mental condition,” concluded Ms. May.
