OTTAWA – Today, we honour the enduring vision of freedom and equality for all those in the LGBTQ2 community. Breaking the Silence is the theme of this year’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
A recent report by Egale Canada found that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the physical and mental wellbeing of LGBTQ2 Canadians.
“Historically, LGBTQ2 communities have been disproportionately affected by health crises,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “There are still barriers when it comes to accessing health care and mental health services. For those experiencing homelessness, poverty and social isolation, the pandemic brings even more turmoil and anxiety.”
This year the federal government launched the LGBTQ2 Community Capacity Fund inviting LGBTQ2 organizations with initiatives that contribute to advancing equality to apply for grants from an $18 million dollar fund.
“We welcome initiatives like the LGBTQ2 Community Capacity Fund initiated by the Minister for Women and Gender Equality, Maryam Monself.” said Ms. Roberts. “We are making progress in Canada to advance the rights and meet the needs of LGBTQ2 communities, and initiatives like this will certainly help. Canada’s strength is reflected in the mosaic of our diversity. The more we celebrate each facet, the stronger we become.”
