Green Party Statement for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

OTTAWA  – Today, on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), the Green Party of Canada joins with LGBTIQ+ people everywhere to support and advocate for their equality and freedom. This year’s theme: “Together: Resisting, Supporting Healing!” reflects the challenges that many LGBTIQ+ people continue to face, especially in the context of the pandemic.

“This global health crisis has affected vulnerable groups differently and I have heard about the harm that is being endured by the LGBTQ2+ community,” said Green Party Leader. “It is crystal clear that we need to strengthen supports and protections.”

In 2020, University of Toronto research  indicated that the pandemic has had a greater impact on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirit people due to increased stress about their finances, housing insecurity and loss of employment exacerbating anxiety and depression.

Statistics Canada reported last fall that those in the LGBTQ2+ communities experiencing mental health issues before the health crisis have been more deeply affected by the pandemic. There were also  a record number of hate crimes targeting sexual orientation. “We must do everything possible to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of LGBTQ2+ people,” said Ms. Paul. “This includes ending the anti-scientific bloodban, banning conversion therapy and ending the ongoing stigma associated with HIV and AIDS.”

The Green Party believes that consensual sexual freedom is a fundamental human right and that acceptance and celebration of LGBTQ2+ people and identities are essential for genuine social justice and equity.  Ms. Paul said that developing more community-driven education and awareness programs will lead to a greater understanding of intersex realities and the diversity of sexualities and gender identities.

“As we move into the recovery phase of the pandemic, Greens will continue to advocate for the implementation of a robust societal safety net, one that ensures all Canadians can thrive as we move towards a fair and just society for all. On this day, we celebrate LGBTQ2+ people in Canada and around the world.”
