OTTAWA – This year’s World Health Day theme – Our Planet Our Health – is a timely reminder of the inextricable link between human health and environmental health. Canada witnessed tragic evidence of this when extreme hot weather killed almost 600 people in B.C. last year.
While our country continues to blow through emissions reduction targets and our government persists in offering incremental climate policies, the crisis worsens and the chances of preserving a livable world diminish.
“The impacts of the climate emergency extend beyond our physical health,” said Green Party interim Leader Amita Kuttner. “Climate-related disasters such as heat domes, wildfires, floods and mudslides exact a devastating emotional toll on individuals and communities.
“Our health care system must adapt to this new reality by providing access to a broad range of mental health services to help people deal with the grief and anxiety caused by these events.”
